Influence of Chinese Culture and Art on the Work of Russian Illustrators of Children’s Books of 1950s – 1960s

Abstract

The second half of the twentieth century was marked by a growing interest in the culture and art of the East and Asia, in particular China. At this time, the dialogue between East and West finds expression in art. Therefore, in the field of art criticism, there is a need for a deep theoretical understanding of the phenomenon of intercultural communication. This fact determines the relevance of the research topic related to the study of the influence of Chinese art on the work of Russian illustrators of children’s literature of the 1950s – 1960s. During these years, there has been a significant increase in interest in China’s literary heritage. The field of children’s literature is becoming significant, in which illustrative material is of great importance. The article analyzes illustrations to Chinese fairy tales by such artists as N. Kochergin, V. Konashevich, B. Kalaushin, G. Traugot, I. Titkov, L. Tokmakov, Yu. Molokanov, E. Simakov. The purpose of the study is to determine the peculiarities of the influence of Chinese culture on the work of Soviet illustrators of children’s books of the 1950s and 1960s. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the article for the first time comprehensively analyzes the interpretations of Soviet artists made in the field of book illustrations to works of Chinese literature. The article provides a classification of the artistic elements of Chinese culture, which are used by artists to help Russian readers get acquainted with the life of the Chinese people and immerse them in the atmosphere of a distant country.
