Temple of Love and Mercy. To the History of Creation of St Nicholas Chapel in the Town of Kirishi

Abstract

The history of a small chapel of St Nicholas, erected on the grounds of the Kirishi Interdistrict Clinical Hospital in the second half of the 2010s, is inseparable from the reviving Christian tradition of sisterhood in Russia. Conceived as a symbol of prayerful assistance to the sick, built and decorated with funds raised by Kirishi residents and people of other towns, it also became a centre of spiritual attraction for many people. The laconic, snow-white church was tactfully and organically integrated into the urban environment, and transformed it, having become an example of the visible embodiment of the Gospel commandments of faith, love, and mercy. The article is based on the author’s conversations with Archpriest Nikolai Muravlev and artist Sergey Pichakhchi, as well as photographs of the construction posted online – in the group at social network VKontakte and on the website of the Kirishi Holy Trinity Church parish, publications in “The Kirishsky Fakel” newspaper (“Torch of the Town of Kirishi”) and other sources. Systematization and comparison of a number of scattered pieces of information allowed for a detailed reconstruction of the history of the church construction and decoration, while its careful analysis revealed the peculiarities of its architectural design, artistic decoration and sacred objects, including wall-painting and icons specially created for it. The article mentions the architect’s name for the first time and introduces new data into scholarly circulation: the church building itself and associated with it artists’ works. This published material complements the history of the contemporary religious art development in Russia.
