DEVELOPMENT OF THE GENRE OF CHAEKGEORI IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY IN THE WORKS OF ARTISTS OF THE SEOKTAN WORKSHOP

Abstract

The article examines the transformation of the chaekgeori genre in the early 20th century. Having emerged and flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries as a distinctive form of object painting associated with the visual representation of knowledge and status, the genre acquired new artistic and iconographic features in the 20th century under the conditions of Korea’s modernization. The study focuses on a group of folding screens produced in the Seoktan workshop in the 1920s. The analysis addresses compositional principles, the structure of the object repertoire, and the specific features of the artistic language of these works. Particular attention is given to the interaction between chaekgeori iconography and motifs of the gimeongjeolji genre, as well as to the incorporation of Western objects – clocks, fountain pens, eyeglasses, and tobacco products – into the traditional model of the book still life. The examination of the Seoktan screens makes it possible to trace changes in the visual language of the genre during the first third of the twentieth century within the broader context of cultural transformations of the period.
