HISTORICAL PICTURE GALLERY IN MUNICH'S MAXIMILIANEUM. THE PRACTICE OF CREATING NATIONAL HISTORICAL EXHIBITIONS BY EUROPEAN MONARCHS IN THE 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of national historical exhibitions in the 19th century in European countries and Russia, focusing on the art gallery at the Maximilianeum in Munich. The emergence of such exhibitions was directly linked to the actions of rulers. Their initiatives in this area were based on a perception of the history of the country and its people as the history of the nation, with the goals of memorialization and moral education. The gallery concepts were typically developed by professional historians, and the execution of the paintings was entrusted to recognized masters in the field of historical painting.
