Armour of The Sorrowful Knight from the Collection of the Tsarskoye Selo Museum-Reserve: History and RestorationAbstractThis article is devoted to the comprehensive process of restoration and conservation of the armour of The Sorrowful Knight, a unique monument of the early 19th century that formed part of the funeral ceremonial system of Emperor Alexander I and constituted a pair with the armour of The Joyful Knight. It is the only complete set of armour in Russia that demonstrates the traditions of imperial funeral ceremonies. The artefact represents a valuable historical monument and material evidence of the technological and artistic level of its era. The methodology of the study is based on general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis. The research examines the historical and cultural context of the object and includes an analysis of its place and significance within Russian imperial tradition. A descriptive method was extensively employed to document the condition of the artefact before and after restoration, as well as to record the stages of the restoration process. The relevance of the research is caused by the need to preserve and conduct scholarly study of unique museum objects that form the material foundation of Russian cultural heritage. The novelty of the article lies in introducing this monument into scholarly circulation, as it had not previously been accessible to researchers or the public due to its poor state of preservation. The study presents the first comprehensive examination of the object within the framework of modern restoration practice and clarifies its historical attribution. Field and laboratory research conducted during the restoration process enabled an in-depth examination of the techniques and aesthetic principles characteristic of the period in which the monument was created. As a result of the restoration, the artefact was stabilized from an emergency condition and prepared for exhibition at the State Museum-Reserve Tsarskoye Selo in the Arsenal Pavilion. Following restoration, the object is once again able to fulfill its memorial and cultural-educational functions. The materials and conclusions of this article may be used in scholarly research related to the history of material culture, arms and armour, and museum preservation. The practical aspects of the restoration are of applied significance for specialists in the fields of conservation and metal restoration.
