IMAGES OF SCOTLAND IN JOHN SLEZER'S GRAPHICS

Abstract

The artistic legacy of John Slezer, a military engineer and an artist of topographic landscape, occupies a special place in the graphics of the 17th–18th centuries, in the formation of iconographic aspects of the interpretation of views and in the history of Scotland. The creative principles and imaginative system of the artist’s works are directly related to the circumstances of the biography and professional activity of J. Slezer, with his appeal to Scottish images and views, architectural and fortification structures. The main work is the publication “Theatrum Scotiæ...” (1693), which included a series of images: panoramic views, urban and rural landscapes, images of architectural ensembles, individual buildings and ruins. The classification of image types corresponds to the traditions of the English chorographic treatise and works on the regional history of the 17th century. The features of panoramic landscapes and the representation of wide spaces are influenced by the military and cartographic documentation of their time, reflecting the “cartographic impulse” characteristic of Dutch art (S. Alpers). The principles of interpreting regional heritage in English graphics are related to the formation of interest in the national past and heraldry among the first antiquarians. The images of architecture acquire special significance, becoming markers of space and time in the landscape, they refer to the national tradition and the historical past. The theme of ruins becomes a significant motif in the artist’s interpretation, especially the image of Gothic temples, the visual embodiment of which is associated with certain cultural and ideological aspects. Images of the distant past and the theme of loss become a document of history. Expressiveness, effectiveness and drama in conveying the image of a Gothic ruin is associated with the concept of memory, regional heritage, political views and an emerging taste for stylization. The theme of Gothic architecture and the images of ruins embody the principle of visual interpretation of the past based on recognizable motifs and significant constants of historical memory.
