Iconostasis of the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul in New Peterhof and Its Historical PrototypesAbstractThe article traces the history of the design, construction and existence of the high iconostasis of the Peterhof Peter and Paul Cathedral. The authors of the article draw upon the architectural drawings of Nikolay Sultanov of different times and reveal differences in the concept of artistic design of the iconostasis composition. According to the authors, alterations in the choice of the historical prototype of the iconostasis of the court church were determined by a change in political priorities and the orientation of church art towards Byzantine models. A comparative analysis of the iconostasis structure of the Peterhof Cathedral with the iconostasis of the Greek Orthodox Church San Giorgio dei Greci in Venice revealed both some important coincidences in the system of decoration of monuments, and a significant number of differences associated with the artistic attitudes and preferences of Nikolay Sultanov.
