Contemporary St Petersburg Graphic Artist Aleksander Lytkin. Search for the Form

Abstract

Alexander Lytkin, a contemporary graphic artist from St Petersburg, has been working on the theme of St Petersburg landscapes for many years. Images of urban spaces in his works keep evolving. This evolution continues because of the unique features of his artistic approach and the significance of experimentation in his method. The choice of the theme, the work in various graphic techniques, and the large size of the formats remain unchanged. The article examines search for the form in graphic works by A. Lytkin dedicated to St Petersburg rivers and channels. The author considers selected works created in collagraphy and grattage techniques from 2004 to 2025. These techniques are being defined, their artistic potential and transformations are being analyzed through specific examples. The analysis of water landscapes reveals capabilities of techniques employed by the artist and indicates a new stage in the evolution of St Petersburg image in graphics. The article also represents how academic education promotes the development of new forms of art.
