Samarkand’s Urban Development in the Second Half of the 20th Century. Analysis of Regional Architectural Practice in Soviet UzbekistanAbstractThis article examines Samarkand’s urban development during the second half of the 20th century within the context of Soviet Uzbekistan’s architectural practices. It analyzes key approaches to studying late Soviet Uzbekistan architecture and their relevance to the republic’s regional urban planning, and clarifies the thesis of “Orientalist influences” on architectural design. Particular attention is given to the transformation of historical Uzbek SSR cities under the influence of “modern architecture” and local political figures.
