NEW ARTISTIC TENDENCIES IN THE EDITIONS OF THE BIBLE BY JOHANN ULRICH AND JOHANNA SIBYLLA KRAUS

Abstract

The article is devoted to an innovative approach to the publication of the Bible by Johann Ulrich and Johanna Sibylla Kraus. The books produced in Kraus’s workshop became part of the library of Emperor Peter the Great, and the article examines Bibles from the collection of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Special attention is paid to the artistic features of the books and the unique design, as well as the iconographic originality of the editions Biblisches Engelund Kunstwerk, Historische Bilder-Bibel, Heilige Augen- und Gemüthslust. Each Bible of the Augsburg masters had its own original idea. As an artist and publisher, Kraus introduced new artistic forms of French engraving, combining them with the previous tradition of illustrating biblical books, exerting a significant influence on Russian art of the 18th century.
