Ivan Mikhailov (1893–1993) – Icon Painter of the Dzisna School

Abstract

The article is a study of the work and legacy of Ivan Mikhailov, the leading master of the Dzisna school of Old Believer icon painting of the 20th century. The purpose of the work is to fill in the gaps in the study of certain areas of icon painting of the Old Believers of the Belarusian-Baltic region, comprehensively analyzing the artistic, technological and iconographic features of Mikhailov’s works. The study uses comparative stylistic and technological analysis, data from personal archives are introduced, which allows us to examine in detail the evolution of the master’s work from the early to the late period. As a result, the characteristic features of his individual manner, as well as specific technological methods, were identified and systematized. The corpus of works created by Mikhailov for the communities of Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and the USA is described. The article introduces new information on the painting technology and materials used by the master, conducts the art history analysis of his works, and identifies his key role in preserving and maintaining the tradition of the Dzisna school. The author concludes that I. Mikhailov, remaining faithful to the canon, developed the icon painting tradition, adapting it to the challenges of the 20th century, and managed to pass it on to subsequent generations of icon painters.
