Power and Artistic Processes in Iran at the Turn of 20th–21st Centuries

Abstract

The article is devoted to the peculiarities of the relationship between the government and the artistic processes in Iran at the turn of the 20th–21st cen- turies. In the 20th century, the country history made several sharp turns. The development focus changed radically. Actually, the Islamic Revolution of 1979 completely destroyed the traditions that had been formed for decades. Cultural professionals and the works they created were in the most trouble. However, despite the emergence of new goals and objectives in the politi- cal circles, fine arts have not eventually remained single-vector. The article analyzes the art in Iran at the turn of the 20th–21st centuries, when during the reign of Mohammad Khatami (1997–2005) mechanisms were launched not only to return the attention to the Iranian history and culture, but also to rethink it creatively, simultaneously taking into account the Western trends of the 20th century. Various examples show the changes that eventually led to a significant increase in artistic activity in the country, the increase in the number of museums, art galleries, masters and works of the highest level created by them.
