GROUPS OF "PROGRESSIVE" ARTISTS IN CALCUTTA, MADRAS AND BOMBAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 20TH CENTURY: SYNTHESIS OF ACADEMIC AND INNOVATIVE TRENDS
Abstract
Groups of progressive artists were formed in different parts of India in the 1940s. Their work was markedly different from the romanticized paintings of Ravi Varma and the stylized works of Obonindronath Tagore and his students from the Bengali school. These painters bravely used academic traditions and techniques of various modernist trends in their work. They tried to wrest creativity from the fetters of traditions and express new values and modern problems in it.
