Touches on the Creative Portrait of Mstislav Farmakovsky During the Siege

Abstract

This article is devoted to the work of Mstislav Farmakovsky, who served as chief curator of the State Russian Museum from 1939 to 1946 and also worked on his doctoral dissertation on the methods of studying ancient textiles. The scientist completed his research during the Siege, thanks to his experience of saving the Russian Museum collection. The manuscript section of the State Russian Museum scientific archive contains the memoirs of V. Farmakovskaya, M. Farmakovsky’s wife, about the Siege. Her memoirs focus on the preservation and rescue of the Russian Museum collection during the war. She describes the museum staff, who worked in this period, and also creates a vivid literary portrait of her husband. The materials of a small exhibition dedicated to V. Lenin’s anniversary in 1942, held in the Russian Museum’s bomb shelter, are important for this article. There was a scientific meeting of museum staff dedicated to the exhibition. Documents from the meeting contain Farmakovsky’s recollections of his childhood friendship with V. Lenin, which provide some clarifications to his biography. M. Farmakovsky’s autobiography, written in 1942, is also preserved in the Russian Museum archive. He provides interesting information about his early paintings, as well as about his trips abroad in the mid-1900s. The novelty of this article lies in the introduction of new materials into scholarly circulation, shedding light on the creative biography of this renowned Russian cultural figure. Furthermore, the author of the article discovered a previously unstudied, unique oil painting by Farmakovsky, “Leningrad, February 1942,” from the collection of the State Museum of the History of St Petersburg, which is an important addition to the master’s oeuvre. The article concludes that M. Farmakovsky’s work during the siege has great importance for the development of modern museum studies and art history.
