Historical Genre in Contemporary St Petersburg Academic Art. Main Tendencies of Development

Abstract

Special attention in Soviet historical painting was focused on the events of Russian and Soviet history. Most Leningrad academic artists of the second half of the 20th сentury sought to conform to the established system of values in Soviet art. In the 21st century, historical painting has evolved towards a more private, individually colored understanding of history, based on humanistic ideals. The themes of the works and the interpretation of historical events are becoming more diverse. The processes of de-ideologization that have taken place in society have also affected the attitude of artists towards history. In the 21st century, in the works of the historical genre, there is more subjectivism and the manifestation of the artists’ conception. The article focuses on the most significant trends in the historical painting of St Petersburg academic art.
