Criteria of Professionalism in Modern Academic Fine Arts. Analysis of the Annual Exhibition of Diploma Art Works (2025)

Abstract

The most successful examples created as final diploma art works by graduates of all art faculties of St Petersburg Repin Academy of Fine Arts (Painting, Sculpture, Graphic art, Architecture) were presented at the annual exhibition of graduates of the Academy in the Grand halls of the Scientific Research Museum at the Russian Academy of Arts in 2025. However, it was dominated by the works of graduates of the graphic faculty, shown almost without exception. The phenomenon of recent years has been the extraordinary popularity of academic art. Ordinary semester exhibitions at the Academy have turned into peculiar performances that have become incredibly popular with audiences of all ages. Accordingly, the defense of diploma art works, which is held openly in the main halls of the Scientific Research Museum at the Russian Academy of Arts, has turned into performance. Exhibitions of diploma art works have acquired a higher status than before. In our city, they have become notable events from quiet and inconspicuous presentation of the reporting period. It is now a special honour for graduates to be accepted with their works in the exposition. Using the example of the 2025 exhibition, one can talk about many problems of modern art, ask questions about what subjects contemporary young authors choose, what materials they work in, what style preferences they have, etc. The authors of the article reflect on the problems of professionalism in modern art using the method of art historical analysis in connection with this exhibition. This raises a very important question about the prospects of modern academic art and the relevance of graduates of the Academy.
