DEMETER, MUSE, OR VESTAL VIRGIN? ON THE ATTRIBUTION AND RESTORATION OF A 2ND-CENTURY FEMALE STATUE FROM THE HERMITAGE COLLECTION

Abstract

Preserving cultural heritage, including the unique collection of ancient sculpture, is an important part of the Hermitage conservation and restoration work. The joint work of the Department of the Ancient World (headed by A. A. Trofimova) and the Laboratory for the Scientific Restoration of Marble and Colored Stone Sculpture (headed by S.L. Petrova) has allowed many pieces in the permanent exhibition to gain a new life. One of the most recent examples of this collaborative work is the Female Statue, which entered the Hermitage collection from Tsarskoye Selo in 1850. This sculpture is interesting both for its perception over nearly two centuries (from the 18th to the 20th centuries), when its attribution changed, and for its restoration. The statue is on display in Hall 114 of the New Hermitage, among works iconographically related to Greek art of the 4th century BC but dating back to the Roman period.
